Save Money On Your New Kindle

By Trading In Your Old One

amazon kindle fire tablet computerYou may be a little surprised to learn that you can save money on your new Kindle Touch or Kindle Fire (or any other product on sale on Amazon’s website for that matter) by trading in your old Kindle. In fact, there are a number of different types of product that you can now trade in on Amazon, in return for which you will get an Amazon gift card credited to your account.

At the moment, you can trade in items which are in the following Amazon categories:

  • Electronics
  • Movies & TV
  • Textbooks
  • Video games

Items in the above categories may be traded in – but that need not mean that all the items in the above categories will be accepted. Nevertheless, the list is pretty extensive – and various Kindle readers have now been added to it.

If, for example, you currently have a Kindle Keyboard with Wi-Fi and 3G, and feel an urge to replace it with a Kindle Touch, you could get up to $ 41.50 by trading in your old Kindle. Hardly a fortune, but every little helps.

Amazon will also accept readers, tablet computers and other devices, from other manufacturers. If you have amassed a collection of redundant electronic gadgets – or even video games that you’re finished with, you might be able to cash in.

Amazon’s Trade In Scheme In Brief

Whilst it may be possible that you could get a little more money for your items on eBay, or by some other method of private sale, the Amazon scheme is really very convenient.

  1. Amazon pay the shipping (you have to print out a UPS label and drop of the package at a UPS point).
  2. You can include a number of different items in one package.
  3. Items which are traded in need to be available for sale on the Amazon site. However, they need not have been bought from Amazon.
  4. Trade in prices are displayed for each item – according to condition.
  5. If Amazon think that the condition is worse than your estimate you will be advised and given the option to either accept a lower amount or to have your goods returned.
  6. If Amazon consider the condition to be better than your estimate, you will receive extra money.
  7. If there is any disagreement – say regarding the condition of the goods – and you do not wish to continue with the trade, Amazon will pay the return shipping.
  8. The maximum value per trade in is $ 750. If you have goods to a higher value, you can still trade them in, but you will need to do this in two separate transactions.

Trading Your Stuff In On Amazon

It’s a fairly straightforward system. You can just head on over to Amazon’s trade-in page, see if they are taking whatever items you’re finished with, and see what the prices are. If you like the prices, go ahead and ship your stuff to Amazon for free. If not, you can always look at another way to sell your used gadgets, games and DVDs.

Just one final point – it’s probably worth noting that Amazon’s trade in scheme is still in beta. So, if you do visit the page, and they don’t want to trade whatever you would like to sell, don’t be too disappointed. It would be worth your while to check back every once in a while as they will probably expand the range of items that they accept in future – assuming that the scheme does well and proves popular with their customers that is.

I had no idea that Amazon had a trade-in program. That is a really neat idea. I am going to have to go and look at what they will take as a trade in and see if I can get some money for some of the junk we have around.

    Thanks for the information.

      Hi Dee Ann,

Thanks for stopping by. The trade-in scheme is still in Beta I believe. They are expanding the amount of items that they will accept all the time. Hope you manage to raise a few bucks from your “junk”.

      Hi Carolyn,

It’s a new service – still in Beta. Check back on a regular basis as they are adding to the list of items that they will accept all the time. It’s a good way to declutter and save a few dollars at the same time.
